Life Is Like A Box Of Records: Freja Frances

Freja Frances makes a welcome return with another batch of delicate, heartfelt tracks that look set to mesmerise her audience once again with the release of her double a-side single, Porcelain Doll / Breathe, on 4th November 2016 via ShimmerSun Music

Here are some of Freja’s most influential records:

David Bowie – Space Oddity

My Dad would always play a lot of music when I was a kid and usually I was pretty disinterested by it, but when I was about ten he went through a phase of playing a lot of Bowie and I just remember absolutely loving Space Oddity, I don’t even know what it was about it that appealed to me so much but it was my favourite song for a really long time. It was the first song that made me realise that maybe older music was actually worth paying attention to after all.

Avril Lavigne – Losing Grip

Avril Lavigne was my first role model in the music industry, there was about a year when I was a kid where she was pretty much the only artist I’d listen to. I thought it was so awesome to see a girl fronting a rock band. Her music was a huge influence on my writing style at that time.

My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade

This was the song that got me into My Chemical Romance, I first heard it when I was on a holiday with family friends, it was on a mixed CD that my friend had made for us to listen to in the car so I just have all these memories of driving through sunny Spain singing along to The Black Parade with my family. As well as the song being incredibly anthemic, it also introduced me to the idea that songs can be about things other than love and relationships which I think has been important to my own song writing.

Tokio Hotel – Totgeliebt

Me and my friends were obsessed with this band when we were younger! They are the reason I got talking to one of my now close friends and the reason that I did so well in my German GCSE! Listening to them now reminds me of a German exchange I went on when I was fourteen, we listened to Tokio Hotel so much on that trip!

Elvis Presley – Can’t Help Falling In Love

When I was first going out with my ex I remember him singing this song for me on guitar. He hadn’t practiced and he messed up the chords a lot but it was a really sweet moment. This song always reminds me of him.

Bastille – Pompeii

So my cousins and sister are all incredibly musically talented and whenever we see each other we always jam together. Pompeii was one of the first songs we all played together, it was on a holiday a couple of years back, it’s a great song to sing as a group because it’s such a feel good song and because of all the backing vocals it sounded awesome!!

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Can’t Stop

When I was in sixth form I spent the majority of my time in the school’s music rooms jamming with my friends. Can’t Stop is one of the songs that got played a lot (so much that I actually used to know all the lyrics!) Now it always reminds me of those times, they are definitely some of my favourite memories from school.

Soak – B a nobody

I went to a festival called In The Woods a couple of years ago and it was an amazing experience; it’s pretty small and the atmosphere was so magical, I loved it! You don’t know who any of the artists are before you go so I didn’t know most of the bands there but I remember seeing Soak and loving her so much! This was my favourite song for a long time afterwards.

Darlia – Dear Diary

I discovered Darlia a couple of years ago when I saw them supporting Gerard Way, it was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, I remember hearing them and just immediately loving them. I had this song on repeat for so long and it’s still one of my favourite songs!

Taylor Swift – Out of the Woods

I listened to 1989 a lot last year after going through a breakup and Out of the Woods really spoke to me; it pretty much perfectly describes the feeling of being in a relationship where you really like the person but it never feels quite right. I love that the song is very pop and upbeat while also being really relatable, the whole album reminds me of the time I spent learning to be happy with being single.

Porcelain Doll / Breathe is out on 4th November 2016 via ShimmerSun Music.
