Ones To Watch: 2012

So it is that time again that we don’t so much like to declare as our tips for 2012, but more our ‘Ones to Watch’.<!–more–>

There will be some in here that you recognise immediately and others that you may need to dig a little deeper. Ultimately, just go and listen to their music. That is the main aim of this exercise.

<strong><a href=”http://www.glasgowpodcart.com/wp-content/uploads/vasa.jpg”><img class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-7585″ title=”vasa” src=”http://www.glasgowpodcart.com/wp-content/uploads/vasa.jpg” alt=”” width=”200″ height=”172″ /></a></strong>

<strong>Vasa</strong>

Probably the best demo we have heard at Podcart. ‘Jigsawng’ was stumbled upon via SoundCloud by our own Kirstin Lynn and we were stopped in our tracks. Then began 7 days of listening to this track non-stop. The thing I love most about this band is that they have worked hard behind the scenes to produce something that is incredible as a first taster and not just put out anything. If this is their debut song then I am going to need a cold compress for what is to come. Next we see them live…..

<strong>Miaoux Miaoux</strong>

Julian Corrie is the man behind the artist name and he is one of the best in this country when it comes to production. His talent is extraordinary and 2012 promises to be a very special year for him. Whether on record or live Miaoux Miaoux delivers every time. His performance in a caravan (the smallest rave in the world) at this year’s Wickerman with our friends Detour filming was one of our ultimate highlights of 2011. He really deserves a massive audience.

<strong>St Deluxe </strong>

It has been a while since these boys were in our listening company; however with an album in the pipeline due for release in 2012 we are very excited. The boys have promised a differing sound and even some pop in there! For a band like St Deluxe this is an important year for them and if their previous material is anything to go by we think they will be just fine.

<strong>Salò</strong>

Having seen these boys live twice now they break the mould when it comes to head pummelling dirty rock. With no definitive lead singer and the trio each taking turns to sing it is something brilliant to witness. The energy and sheer rawness this band has is additive and having seen Vic Galloway’s reaction to them on first play at our 100th podcast recording then we know they have loads of fans ready to board.

<strong>Abi Wade </strong>

This is a curveball from us and someone that we have been introduced to in the last couple of month by the beautiful team at Work It Media. Abi is a cellist that uses every part of her instrument. I have never seen a cello played like this and her percussive techniques combined with her nectar vocals are stunning.  She will be releasing her single ‘Stability’ on a new label started by Esben &amp; the Witch’s Daniel Copeman in early 2012.

<strong>United Fruit </strong>

What a year the boys had in 2011 and their debut album Fault Lines was one of our top 5 albums of the year. Punk, grunge, you name it they do it and with new material being written for a follow up album we cannot contain ourselves. The praise that this band has received particularly from the BBC Introducing gang and Vic Galloway is nothing short of astounding. With headline shows kicking off the year in Glasgow’s King Tuts and Edinburgh’s Electric Circus it is sure to be another stellar year for a band that are edging closer and closer to their sublime potential.

<strong>Happy Particles </strong>

When Happy Particles released their debut album on Christmas Day I had a bit of fear that it would be overshadowed by the holiday festivities. I was wrong, but I still think that this band have so much more to come. This album is going to be one of those that grow over the course of the year and the more people listen to it then the more they will tell their friends. This is the way I think it was supposed to happen with this band. I would far rather see them grow organically than have a wham bam thank you and goodnight. I urge you to go and listen, purchase, tell your friends about this album. Actually I am begging. The soundscapes that they create are breathtaking. In three words, I love them.

<strong>PAWS</strong>

2012 welcome PAWS, for they are going to kick you in the balls, put you in a headlock and then scare the shit out of you. The reason for fear? Well, we have 3 young men that are producing songs that can transcend not only across generations, but also across continents. Big words there Halina! In all seriousness though, having seen the journey these boys have been on and how important this is for them I really hope that people continue to appreciate how good these guys are. Podcart will always be thankful for this band coming into our lives.

<strong>Profisee </strong>

Oh Muslim Alim, thank you SO much for shining a light on this man and bringing him to our attention. Profisee has something I just can’t put my finger on. He takes me back to when I discovered The Roots and I was so overcome with jubilation that something so stylistically different from what I was listening to at the time had penetrated my listening habits. ‘Gone (In a Flash)’ which was played on our 101st podcast and actually produced by Muslim is one of my tunes of 2011. Profisee promises an album release in 2012 and by God I am so fucking excited!

<strong>Kill the Waves</strong>

Probably the artist I am most excited about in 2012. I just really hope they keep up a consistency and keep on it. Formerly called ‘Camembert’ which lets face it was a terrible band name. They will forgive my criticisms though I am sure. Syncopated electronic loops, yearning vocals and a band that tap into my most favourite style of music. I.e. emotional, soaring passages of genius writing. Like Conquering Animal Sound last year I really hope they take everything they have to the next level and run with it.

<strong>Lady North </strong>

Oh you talented little bastards. My favourite band to come out of 2011 and I have no difficulty in saying that. They were one of the best live things I witnessed even when they played as a duo. I really want these guys to get on the road now and start letting the rest of the country see what they can do. Everyone that has been introduced to them have fallen in love. Most recently our Christmas show had new fans raving about them and I fear I am going to run out of words to try and express my praise. 2012 is going to be a beautiful year for them.

<strong>The Wonder Villains</strong>

So we travel to Northern Ireland and something completely different. Their track ‘Running in Circles’ is bloody brilliant. A band that manages to combine punk, pop and the most additive melodies in a way that the Japanese are going to be crawling all over them with any luck. With a recent Huw Stevens session, The Wonder Villains have grabbed our attention as they are something completely different from the post-rock and alternative scuzz that we are used to from Norn Iron. This music just exudes happiness.

<strong>Our Krypton Son </strong>

Last, but not least is Smalltown America’s Our Krypton Son. His single Catalonian Love Song is due for release in early 2012 and was named recently as one of our SoundCloud picks. Another Northern Irish artist and one that fans of Richard Hawley and The Divine Comedy will bathe in. A real gem for 2012.

<object classid=”clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000″ width=”100%” height=”81″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0″><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always” /><param name=”src” value=”https://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F10309118″ /><embed type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”100%” height=”81″ src=”https://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F10309118″ allowscriptaccess=”always”></embed></object><span><a href=”http://soundcloud.com/our-krypton-son/catalonian-love-song”>Catalonian Love Song</a> by <a href=”http://soundcloud.com/our-krypton-son”>Our Krypton Son</a></span>

So there you have it. As we say though, the main aim is to please take the time and listen to these folks. They really are exceptionally talented and produce music that is just, well brilliant.
