Modern Olympia and Chic Chameleon have made a song built for dancing with your eyes half closed.
Percussively, it’s packed with bombast. There’s an old-school big-beat punch in the drums that makes you nod before you realise you have started to move, and it sits under a wash of shoegaze blur without ever being swallowed by it. Dream pop is supposed to drift, and this one drifts with purpose.
The melodies match the drums for drive, and they have the cleverness of a proper pop writer alongside the sweep of something much larger. Layers of melody and synth stack up without tripping over each other, so by the end you feel as if you have been carried somewhere enormous. Going big without losing the warmth is a tricky balance, and this strikes it with a confidence that never looks like effort.
