With ‘Loading‘, James Blake offers another taster of his keenly anticipated new album ‘Playing Robots Into Heaven’.
His signature electronic-soul sound is on full display with enveloping productions and skittering beats, anchored by Blake’s (and guest’s) singular falsetto.
Over pulsating syncopated rhythms, vocals shift from robotic to soulful as they explore technology’s grip on modern life. Abstract lyrics conjure vivid images that linger like a dream. ‘Loading‘ finds Blake continuing to push boundaries, blending organic and electronic to mesmerising effect.
Though the sparse production nods to his early work, there’s a new luminosity here. Blake’s songwriting has become more oblique but remains impactful. ‘Loading‘ is lush sound design, another fascinating entry in Blake’s catalogue of future electronic R&B.
This tastes like a rich preview of Blake in peak form. ‘Playing Robots Into Heaven‘ can’t arrive soon enough.
