With the release of her latest album This Rock, Jill Lorean delivers a thoughtful and poignant taster in track ‘Black Dog‘.
Moving away from the traditional tale surrounding the theme of the black dog, Lorean pens a new narrative. One that places honesty at the centre of everything. Honesty surrounding who we are as people, how we live our lives and what can make us happy.
This is a track of movements, almost reflecting realisations in our lives and the stages it takes. I am weirdly reminded of The Wrens ‘Happy‘ which delivers similar feelings. The initial sadness moves into pondering, then comes anger and then triumph.
This is also a track of conflicts, there’s a strange warmth that bubbles but the caustic dynamic changes move between light and shade. And all the while the looming string rivulets move seamlessly between their major and minor sonic canopy.
Lorean leaves all manner of potent thoughts dancing in your head, there’s a subsequent flood of emotions that rush. There is a lot to discover here as arrangements go, but as a whole, this is Lorean’s finest work to date.
