Sharon: ‘In my bedroom’

The breath is what I keep coming back to on Sharon’s ‘In my bedroom’.

The vocal sits so close to the listener that it feels as if it was recorded in the room you are sitting in, and that intimacy is what gives the track its pull. Underneath, the UK Garage instrumental does the opposite job. The syncopated beats are punchy and restless, the atmospheric synths hang in the air around them, and the whole track keeps a pulse that is hard to sit still to. There is a lovely tension between a song about lying in your room, unable to shake someone, and a beat that keeps wanting you out on the floor.

Sharon describes the song as the phase where infatuation takes over and all you can do is lock yourself away and keep writing about the person, and the production carries that feeling well. The vocal is breathy and intoxicating in the way the most compelling late-night records tend to be, so the obsession comes through as much as the words do. That’s the trick, and it lands. As the fourth single from the upcoming EP Eurolove, it shows how a bedroom-pop sensibility can sit comfortably inside UK Garage without losing its intimacy.
