We have put together a list of songs that have stood out this month for a plethora of reasons. Please take the time to invest and immerse yourself in them:
Cool American: ‘Focus’
‘Focus’, is a fully-formed offering from the Portland quartet. The idiosyncrasies and pop sensibilities make this a fascinating listen. Dare I say, this will not be what you are expecting. It’s a passionate, unique and charming release from a blissfully original band.
Alyeska: ‘Stones’
The Californian duo continues to impress with a growling indie steamroller. Hitting a beautiful sweet spot between formlessness and structure, ‘Stones’ glides effortlessly between muscular no wave to slacker rock and back again. This achieves a sense of real satisfaction by the end and one that will leave you hitting play again immediately.
Courtney Marie Andrews: ‘Kindness Of Strangers’
Andrews has worked tirelessly over the years to get her music to the masses. Having toured relentlessly, it seems she has finally started to break through. Her latest release really hits your heart hard. A poignant and spellbinding mix, this speaks with clear and undeniable honesty.
Pure Mids: ‘The Leader’
Brimming with a rich, astral production, the Californian outfit remains true to the whimsical stereotypes of their home city. The swirling, pulsating synth backbone of the song serves as a gorgeous bed for candid vocals to soar through. A captivating listen.
Mahalia: ‘Proud Of Me (feat. Little Simz)’
The 19-year-old Leicester artist is undoubtedly one of the most exciting new kids on the bloc. With its solid injection of soul, gospel, R&B, and hip-hop, there is a beautiful balance between all genres making her something memorable. The slick production doesn’t take away from the raw, bluesy power of the song. Expansive and warm, she is one to watch – closely.
Kidsmoke: ‘Sister Sadness’
Kidsmoke stand out in their field, there’s so much saturation that at times bands just start to meld into one another within the indie dream-pop landscape, but this is a lofty triumph. The foucreatescreate an exquisite otherworldly soundscape around themselves, however, their confidence remains at their nucleus.
October’s Child: ‘Lava’
A perfectly executed masterclass in production. This has such a wonderfully deep, richness from top to toe and sewn together by a plush instrumentation and velvet vocal. This is beautifully haunting and completely understated.
Adam Stafford: ‘Strangers Care When You Burn’
Arguably, one of the finest artists to emerge from Scotland, Adam Stafford has a strength, honesty and commitment to his work that has to be admired. He continues to think outside of the music box and does so again here. He is a visionary with dark thoughts, striking ideas and one of the most important musicians of my generation.
Drang: ‘Lucky You’
The mysterious London outfit catapult in with a rigid, angular punk success. Calling back to the likes of CAN, Neu! and more, this has a subtle transcendence of form leaving you grappling for more.
Falcon Jane: ‘Go With The Flow’
This is soaked to the bone in a naive sweetness that just leaves you sat back in your chair sighing. Watch as the goosebumps start to raise on your skin and put a hand on your chest to feel your heart beating strongly. This is an astonishing song.
