The Amazing Snakeheads – Amphetamine Ballads
The Phantom Band – Strange Friend
The Twilight Sad – Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave
Treacherous Orchestra – Grind
Withered Hand – New Gods
Young Fathers – DEAD

There are no doubt a plethora of established artists amongst the line-up including Mogwai and Idlewild whose stamina continues to impress me, however for me there are a few others that I really hope score the prize.

The Twilight Sad and PAWS are two bands in particular who have worked incredibly hard and knowing that they still struggle financially despite being on a label (FatCat Records), then it is worth remembering that everything isn’t peachy as soon as you get signed. On a more positive note, it is recognition like this that cannot be ignored.

For me however, Kathryn Joseph is the one I want to win. First introduced to me many moons ago by TYCI podcast/radio producer Amanda Stanley, Joseph is in a league of her own. Her honest vocals pull at even the most rigid of heartstrings and for me, she conjures the same feelings I first had listening to the likes of Radiohead (who she covered for BBC Radio Scotland) and Low. Her album Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled’ is one of the most accomplished I have heard.

The public vote takes place May 25th – 27th, the subsequent shortlist of 10 will be announced on May 28th and the award ceremony takes place June 17th with the winner announced on the night.
